Spring has gotten off to a great start! The Wilson-Gray YMCA Youth & Family Center held its second annual College Tour and our Youth Teen Incentive Program (Y-TIP) hosted a record 41 students from different programs and high schools throughout the Hartford area. We kicked off the week-long tour in North Carolina. There, we visited the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Our next destination was Virginia; within two days we visited four schools including Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, Norfolk State University and Hampton University. At Hampton, we were delighted to be greeted by former program member and current college sophomore, Khalil Abrams. Our tour concluded in Maryland at the University of Maryland and finally Morgan State University.
After such an eventful week of tours and traveling, we were able to squeeze in some much needed down time. What better way to do that than with major league baseball? We attended a Washington Nationals and a Philadelphia Phillies game.
This trip gave prospective college students an opportunity to develop in a number of ways. Participants were able grow in areas including social and cultural awareness, leadership and networking skills. In addition, a majority of the kids gained a sense of independence as this was their first trip of out of Connecticut. The college tour gave them vivid insight into the college experience and motivated them to continue pursuing their goals. All of this while making new friends!
