About Our Honoree
Rev. Richard C. Allen

Rev. Allen’s journey with the YMCA began in childhood as he watched his dad play squash on the Hartford courts. He remembers jumping into the pool there, too! As a teenager in Westfield, MA, he joined the chess club at the local Y on Court Street. But it was during his seven years on Cheyenne River Reservation in western South Dakota that his commitment deepened. In that remote setting, he witnessed the difference the Y was making in the lives of Lakota youth and families. The Sioux Y contributes mightily to the well-being of all ages. Since leaving the Reservation in 1980, he has served as a trustee of the Sioux Y. At subsequent parishes in Wisconsin and Connecticut, he introduced his churches to the Sioux Y’s need for support (financial and spiritual). Serving South Church here in Glastonbury has given him the chance to support our summer camp, to know our staff, and to be a presence at our annual meetings. His joy in storytelling and his passion for bringing different cultures together remain at the heart of his ministry.
