Our next #HumansoftheY story comes from a very special young man named Gabe, who exemplifies taking what life has thrown you and finding a way to make it positive. We're proud of you Gabe, and lucky to have you part of the Wilson-Gray YMCA Youth and Family Center, Y-TIP and DIG Chess Club families! "In 2008, my mom got a revelation from God that she would be sent to North Carolina and South Carolina to preach the word of God to the homeless. We had just moved out of my grandmother’s and into my family’s own East Hartford, Connecticut, apartment a year earlier. I now know that was the calm before the storm, because before moving down south, my mother decided that in order for us to be able to relate with the homeless and help them, my family became homeless.

See how Greg lost 204 pounds at the Y! #YSlimdown #HumansoftheY "About two years ago I was 400-my max was 400 pounds, that was my biggest. I started working out, playing soccer, doing a bit of cardio, and I went all the way down from 400 to 185, basically got all the body fat off of me so I could start from scratch. Then I started coming here to the Y and bodybuilding, and went up to 240. I was doing a lot of heavy lifting, and added cardio to tone up and trim up. Now I'm down to 196, 5 to 10% body fat.

Our next #HumansoftheY are a great example of corporate wellness! A group from SoVita Chiropractic Center finds the time every day to walk over from their clinic on Lewis Street to the Downtown Hartford YMCA, and they work out together! Talk about teamwork! Dr. Jerry, Kelsey, Matt and are the core workout crew, and are sometimes joined by their practice’s enthusiastic founder, Dr. Karlos Boghosian. And they know that workouts are always #BetterTogether. Karlos: The name SoVita comes from Sophos in Greek, meaning wisdom, and vita in Latin, meaning vitality, so because we know we want to impart wisdom to our people and help them to live their lives and express their life to their full potential.

Our next #HumansoftheY story is told from the point of view of a loving husband, John, whose wife Bernadine is enrolled in the Wheeler YMCA's LiveSTRONG program. Bernadine has come such a long way in such a short time, and we are so proud of her! “My Name is John and my wife is Bernadine and she is currently enrolled in the LiveSTRONG program at the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA. She has never been an athletic person and was diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer around December 2016. She was told she was in remission in August 2017.

HUMANS OF THE Y: Shantelle (August 17)

Our next #HumansoftheY story is an inspiration for all families using our facilities! Thank you Shantelle for your family's part in helping to make the Wilson-Gray YMCA Youth and Family Center such a great place to spend time together! "I enjoy coming here, and my kids are members--they use the playground outside. I love that it’s something for the community, something to help keep the kids out the streets, somewhere for them to go. Something that I like about the playground here is that it’s a small, enclosed area. Me and my children try to keep the area clean. When we come to the park before they go and play, they have to do one round with a garbage bag picking up trash, and then leave that on the fence so that other people can see what they’re doing, and maybe not think not to throw something on the floor, but to throw it in the garbage bag. We have to take care of where we play."

HUMANS OF THE Y: Abby (August 10)

Our next #HumansoftheY story comes from quite the accomplished bowler out of the Hale YMCA Youth and Family Center! Abby and 3 teammates recently returned from the Special Olympics in Seattle, where they earned a gold medal in the team bowling competition! Abby also won an individual silver, and came in fourth for couples. Congrats Abby! “We started training in January for the Special Olympics. We didn’t care what place we came, but we ended up doing really well. It was a good trip. We didn’t know he was going to do this, but when we got on the plane, the pilot announced that our team was on board and everyone clapped for us. Our team won the gold medal in the team event. We were down by 22 pins and we came back to win! In the doubles we got fourth. My favorite part of the trip was meeting people and making new friends. On the way home, we were looking up all our new friends on Facebook and posting pictures and funny comments. The next Special Olympics will be in 2022 in Orlando and I hope to compete in bowling again.”
